After 500 years from Amerigo Vespucci’s death with this silver coin San Marino wants to render homage to the florentine traveller. On the obverse the coat of arms of the Republic of San Marino by Antonella Napolione. On the reverse the image of the explorer enframed in a geometric composition, on the right side the vertical inscriptions “1512•2012”, on the left the value “5 EURO” and the symbol “R”; under the image of Vespucci there is the name of the designer “U. PERNAZZA”, in the lower part the inscription “AMERIGO VESPUCCI”. Around in circle “E VIDI QUATTRO STELLE GODER PAREA IL CIEL DI LOR FIAMMELLE”. During his second travel, the explorer discovered four stars which indicated south and to describe them he quoted Dante’s Divina Commedia “Io me volsi a man destra e posi l’altro polo e vidi quattro stelle non vista mai fuor ch’alla prima gente goder parea il ciel di lor fiammelle”.
